World's First Ozone-Friendly Tea: Sustainable Sri Lanka
In 2007, Sri Lanka achieved an extraordinary milestone in global environmental stewardship: it became the first country in the world to produce 100% Ozone-Friendly Tea certified under the United Nations Montreal Protocol.
What is "Ozone-Friendly" Tea?
For decades, tea growers worldwide relied on Methyl Bromide—a powerful chemical fumigant—to treat nursery soils against nematodes. However, methyl bromide is a major contributor to the depletion of the Earth's protective ozone layer.
Recognizing the ecological danger, Sri Lanka's Tea Research Institute partnered with regional plantation companies to replace methyl bromide entirely with eco-friendly bio-pesticides, solarization techniques, and organic soil management.
Key Environmental Certifications of Ceylon Tea:
- 100% Methyl Bromide Free: Zero depletion of the atmospheric ozone layer.
- Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) Compliant: Audited for fair worker wages, healthcare, and estate community housing.
- Rainforest Alliance Certified Estates: Preserving natural forest corridors surrounding Sinharaja and Sri Pada reserves.
- Protected Watershed Management: Estates maintain natural bamboo and grass buffer zones along rivers to prevent soil erosion into hydroelectric reservoirs.
When you drink Pure Ceylon Tea, you are sipping an eco-conscious beverage produced with deep respect for the planet and future generations.
