Masterclass: How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Ceylon Tea
Brewing tea is both an art and an exact science. Using the correct water quality, leaf ratio, water temperature, and steeping duration allows the intricate aromatic terpenes and flavor compounds of Pure Ceylon Tea to bloom perfectly.
The 4 Golden Rules of Tea Brewing
1. Water Quality Matters
Always use fresh, cold, filtered water low in calcium and mineral hardness. Reboiled or stale water lacks dissolved oxygen, resulting in a flat, dull cup.
2. Precise Leaf Ratio
The ideal standard ratio for traditional Ceylon Tea is 2.5 grams of leaf per 200ml (7 oz) of water (roughly one rounded teaspoon or one pyramid bag).
Brewing Guidelines by Tea Type
| Tea Category | Water Temperature | Steeping Time | Milk / Lemon Pairing |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Grown Black (Nuwara Eliya / Dimbula) | 95°C – 98°C (Just off boiling) | 3 – 3.5 minutes | Best enjoyed neat or with a thin slice of lemon |
| Low Grown Black (Ruhuna / Sabaragamuwa) | 100°C (Full rolling boil) | 4 – 5 minutes | Excellent with fresh warm milk and raw honey |
| Ceylon Green Tea | 75°C – 80°C | 2 minutes | Enjoy neat or infused with fresh mint |
| Ceylon White Tea (Silver Tips) | 70°C – 75°C | 5 – 7 minutes | Serve strictly neat in clear glass stemware |
Pro Expert Tips:
- Preheat Your Teapot: Always swirl boiling water in your teapot or cup prior to brewing to maintain constant temperature during steeping.
- Never Squeeze Tea Bags: Squeezing releases harsh insoluble tannins from broken cell walls, creating bitter astringency.
- Store Airtight: Keep your tea in opaque, airtight tins away from heat, light, and ambient kitchen spices.
